Information about this hopital

Description

Sounon Sero hospital is situated in the province of Borgou in the north of Benin. It was opened in the 1980s by a local NGO called ‘Su tii dera’, an organisation which consists of patrons originally from Nikki, but now active in other parts of the country or world. Via donations to this foundation, they wish to ensure that the region has (and continues to have) access to good quality health care. From 1988 to 1998, there was a partnership with Memisa-Medicus Mundi NGO. In addition to financial support, 3 Dutch doctors also came to work in Nikki during this period. Thanks to these funds, it was possible to purchase medical tools and the hospital was decorated and extended.

In 1998, the work was taken over by Beninese doctors. They are still responsible for the work today and local people in the 3 provinces (a total population of 274, 921 people) are well satisfied with their work. The hospital operates under the auspices of AMCES, an umbrella organisation for non-governmental hospitals in Benin. Nikki is a zone hospital and is therefore a referral hospital for the 33 health centres from the health district. The construction of these numerous health centres in the district has made it possible to set up an effective system of primary health care. There is also a radio link between these different centres. 3 ambulances are available for the entire Nikki sanitary zone. In turn, the hospital can refer patients to the University Hospital of Parakou.

Thanks to support from a Swiss NGO in the late 1990s, it was possible to extend the hospital again to include an operating theatre and a physiotherapy room.

Nikki hospital depends financially on its own income. This means that the staff are paid by the hospital itself. The hospital is also supported by the Swiss Co-operation. They are financing the construction of a new paediatric department. The hospital has 80 beds and all the classical services: surgery, medicine, maternity, and paediatrics, as well as a laboratory, dentistry facilities, and a physiotherapy room.

Results of the missions

The partnership with the hospital in Nikki is in its early stages, but is running smoothly so far. The emphasis is mainly on training doctors and nurses to treat women with VVF (vesico vaginal fistula), but other gynaecological aspects of pathology are also considered.
