Information about this hopital

Description

The hospital is situated on the edge of Ouagadougou. Paul VI is a referral hospital, which is independent of the bishopric and has an agreement with the ministry. It is a large, well equipped hospital and it creates a neat and orderly impression. It has 250 beds at its disposal. This hospital provides all the classical services and has an extremely large maternity department. In view of the importance of the hospital on the periphery of Ouagadougou, and in view of the new management, we have resumed the partnership which we had in 2005. It was also Dr. Thierry Coste from the Belgian Co-operation who showed us around this centre and supported the new request because our actions fit in completely with the operation of the Paul VI hospital: by means of regular missions we can provide part of the required orthopaedic pathology treatment (including hip replacements) to which the population has no access anywhere. Private health care is beyond the reach of the vast majority of the people of Ouagadougou and this means that they are not given any help.

Not many doctors work at this hospital permanently. They hold consultations in the hospital, but most of the time they work privately. Dr Coste (BTC) has not carried out any operations in Paul VI since the start of 2006 because this hospital is no longer part of his working area. 1 permanent doctor/surgeon works in the operating department and 2 permanent nurses are responsible for anaesthetics. 40 of the 158 members of staff are paid by the state, 23 temporary staff are paid by the hospital, and the others are staff who are paid by the bishopric. They do not have any surgical nurses and do not cover emergencies because there is no emergency service to call. This means that there is no provision for basic surgery, yet there are some specialists!! The hospital now has a permanent gynaecologist who is highly motivated and wants to see the hospital make progress in this field. He fully supports the MWV missions.

Results of the missions

Thanks to the involvement of missions, some patients who turn up at the hospital can have an operation. This gives local staff the opportunity to perform these operations with our teams so that they can have some on-the-job training at the same time. The partnership has now been extended from purely humanitarian orthopaedic missions to include gynaecological missions with an emphasis on teaching and training.

In view of the importance of the hospital in this region, we are planning to increase the number of missions each year and to work together more closely. At the request of the gynaecologist, we are planning a mission to the large maternity department. Moreover, if a permanent surgeon is appointed at the hospital and permanent staffing can be guaranteed in the operating department so that emergencies (such as Caesarean sections) no longer have to be transferred, we will plan to start surgical missions to Paul VI. This will increase accessibility for the population.
