MWARAMUTSE,

C'est ainsi que nous nous saluions tous les matins en kinyarwandais.

Nous voici de retour du Pays des Mille Collines après quinze jours de mission.

Un travail intensif (avec parfois des journées de 17 heures et une moyenne de 14 heures par jour), avec la collaboration de tous et de toutes, dans la bonne humeur, nous a permis d'opérer 65 patients.

Vous trouverez ci-après quelques photos illustrant cette mission à Kabgayi.

Ici Kabgayi ...

Nous sommes encore repartis pour une journée marathon ... entre le "Jour le plus long", "Urgences" ou "Grey's Anatomy"!!!

Nous sommes submergés de travail. Les cas défilent: laparotomies, thyroïdes, prostates, fistules vésico-vaginales et traumatisés.

Nous écolons les médecins, infirmiers et stagiaires en salle d'opération, en salle de réveil et dans les services d'hospitalisation.

Nous avons une très bonne collaboration de toute l'équipe.

@ Pierre (Taziaux): Ginette et moi te promettons de repartir avec toi et de te ménager. Tu as le virus africain!

Missie Kabgayi

Dag Christian graag blog aub na.

Een werkweek van 14 pf 15 ur per dag en avondeten om af na middernacht zitten we a bloc. Het ziekenhuis

is overvol en voor volgende week zijn er nog meer wachtende.

We hebben een dage vrij en slapen vooral aan het Kivu meer.

Internet is moeilijk.

Reacties doen veel deugd tot gauw.

Mission de Chirurgie à Kabgayi (Rwanda)

Déjà une semaine de passée. Nous avons réalisé 28 interventions et un grand nombre de consultations.

Nous travaillons de 14 à 15 heures par jour et avons un nouvel horaire pour le souper: minuit!

L'hôpital est plus que plein en raison de l'arrivée de la mission MSV et du Docteur Musa.

Roger continue à améliorer son français même si quand Ginette réveille sa patiente en criant "Amélie", Roger répond "oui" et "amène le lit" :o).

Il règne une très bonne ambiance dans l'équipe qui, ce week-end, se repose au bord du lac Kivu pour reprendre des forces et attaquer la deuxième semaine.

Dimanche nous sommes partis à la découverte de Kigali. Nous avons visité le mémorial du génocide. Nous avons été très touchés et impressionnés.

Lundi 16 mars - Nous nous sommes levés tôt ... à 6h15 ... même pour Ginette. Nous étions attendus pour une réunion de staff et un premier tour de salle.

Une foule de patients attendent les docteurs Musa et Ginette pour la consultation. Ils verront quelques 50 patients.

Roger et Françoise ont trié et rangé les colis. Les deux salles d'opérations sont prêtest pour demain.

De 5 à 6 interventions sont programmées par jour.

Toute l'équipe s'est retrouvée à Zaventem pour embarquer sur le vol à destination de Kigali.

Nous vous tiendrons au courant de la mission soit en postant directement sur le blog si nous avons accès à internet soit en utilisant ce que Bieke appelle le système Françoise (envoi de sms vers la Belgique et transfert de ceux-ci sur le blog).

Toutes vos réactions nous sont transmises via sms (par Christian) ... N'hésitez donc pas à nous faire des commentaires.

Départ

A Quelques heures du départ... les documents sont prêts, les valises fermées...derniers coups de gsm avec mon partenaire...Nous sommes prêts et exités....

Après plusieurs missions au Burkina Faso, je pars à la découverte du rwanda et de sa population ...

Exité de découvrir un autre pays, d'autres mentalités, des différences mais toujours avec cette fierté d'apporter un peu de mon expérience...

 Je vous tiens au courant et vous raconterai notre travail sur place...

Information about this hopital

Description

This hospital is located about 75 kilometres from Kigali, to the north of Butare, and near Gatagara. There are 160 beds here.
The hospital in Kabgayi is managed by the bishopric and is a referral hospital for a population of 700,000 people !!! there is a school of nursing joined to the centre. There are 10 doctors here, 8 of them permanent. There are also some nurses who are supplemented by trainees on work placement from the school of nursingverpleegkundel. The Belgian development agency BTC stopped working together in 1999 and MWV has taken over their mantle. Now that the BTC has resumed its operation (as of 2005) at provincial level, the MWV is working closely with the BTC technical assistant. According to the general economist of the bishopric, the centre would not be able to function without the support of MWV.
Cuba has been sending specialists to help the centre since 2006, but unfortunately they do not speak French, so there is a major communication barrier.
AZV Works together with the BTC in the same way as in the CHK, but since the BTC is not investing in consumable material in the hospital, but in infrastructure, MWV sends standard packages. In addition, we are in consultation with Impact, which is tackling AIDS in the region, and CBM, which works in the field of ophthalmology. As regards management and technical support, we work together with EA and EC.

Results of the missions.

The missions proceed at cruising speed and the partner knows exactly how to organise them efficiently and recruit patients. We have been able to bring the maternity department project to a successful conclusion: the staff are now familiar with echography techniques and current operations. The neonatology certainly deserves further support and we have also started on the paediatrics department as regards organisation and intensive care.
In 2006, we were asked to provide support for the laboratory. The teams at the end of 2006 assessed this request as worthwhile, so in 2008 there will be a prospection visit to ascertain the laboratory needs.
For emergencies, the service definitely has potential, but they are certainly not ready for a mid-care. The course in the direction of the mid-care is being steered by a doctor with authority who is at the head of affairs.
As regards the surgery department, it is clear that this partner deserves to receive further supportchirugie. We therefore plan to continue with technological training and guiding the staff in the operating area in the basic rules for sterility.
In the field of radiology/echography, we have come to the following decision: we will continue to train 1 or 2 doctors in echography and taking X-raysprotocoleren.
The hospital has too many staffing problems (the doctors are always new and young) and financial problems for it to develop quickly. Some progress can be noted, but it requires a lot of time and therefore we will continue to support the following projects until 2010: emergencies, paediatrics, laboratory, and surgery. We hope to be able to start a project on endoscopy in the internal medicine department in 2010, provided that the BTC can finance the material.
