Information about this hopital

Description

Together with the districts of Tenkodogo, Zabré, and Koupèla, Ouargaye makes up the health care districts of the Central East Health Care Region. Ouargaye hospital is a referral hospital and is therefore independent of the Burkina Faso ministry of public health. In turn, the CMA refers patients to the CHR hospital in Tenkodogo. The hospital receives support from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and organisations such as World Neighbours (‘Les Voisins Mondiaux’), Handicap International, UNICEF, and the World Health Organisation. Lydia Tapsoba works for the NGO World Neighbours (‘Les Voisins Mondiaux’).

This organisation, together with the health centres and health units, has carried out a study in the sanitary district of Ouargaye on the problem of vaginal prolapse (the report on this project and the study has been handed over to us). People have been trained to trace and diagnose women with this complaint. MWV has now been requested to provide teaching and training in the surgical treatment, post-operation care, and follow-up treatment of these women. The hospital of Ouargaye is situated about 4 hours (250km) drive from Ouagadougou and 65km from Tenkodogo and is easily accessible. It has been awarded the prize of excellence for good health care (‘prix d’exellence pour les bons soins’). The sanitary district of Ouargaye numbers  236, 841 residents.

There is a surgical department as well as paediatric and maternity units. The CMA has 37 hospital beds (25 for general medical treatment and 12 for surgery). 3 doctors work here, 2 of them trained in basic surgery and 1 generalist. In addition, there are 5 health care assistants (nurses with a speciality),  2 surgical nurses, 2 anaesthetic nurses, and 1 ophthalmology nurse.

Results of the missions

The big advantage of this partnership is the opportunity to work together with World Neighbours (‘Les Voisins Mondiaux’) on their project. They have asked MWV to accept responsibility for the treatment of women with vaginal prolapse. The most important objective is to train workers in the required skills and to follow up the treated women. There has also been a request to train workers in the after-care of these patients. This would involve both hospital staff and staff from the health centres concerned.

The partnership with the CMA is in its early stages. It will be discussed further after the assessment visit planned for 2008.
